What makes these abdominal exercises so effective is that combined they work the abdominal muscles from all angles. There are hundreds of different ab exercises but after testing most of them i vote these to be the best.
Remember if you want a good looking set of abdominal muscles then you need to look at lowering your body fat to around 10% or less. Its the layer of fat on your belly that prevents your six pack from coming through.
Upper Ab Exercises
The upper abs are involved when you bend your upper body towards the lower body, such as in exercises like ab crunches. The first of my 6 best ab exercises is the swiss ball crunch.
Sit on top of swiss ball, feet placed firmly on the floor. Slide forward, rolling the bottom half of your buttocks off the ball, until your lower back is centered atop of the ball. Place your hands at the sides of your head.
Crunch your upper body forward, rolling your shoulders toward your hips. Squeeze your abs at the top of the movement, lower and repeat.
I like this movement because it allows you to get a full stretch on your abdominal muscles and you will really feel the burn.
Number 2 of my 6 best ab exercises is what i like to call the double crunch, and although it works the lower abs as well as the upper abs it is an excellent exercise for upper ab development.
1. Lie back onto floor or bench with knees bent and hands behind head. Keep elbows back and out of sight. Head should be in a neutral position with a space between chin and chest.
2. Start position: Hands behind head and knees bent at 90 degrees.
3. Leading with the chin and chest towards the ceiling, contract the abdominal's and raise shoulders off floor or bench. During the crunch, also bring knees towards chest.
4. Return to start position.
5. Remember to keep head and back in a neutral position. Hyperextension or flexion of either may cause injury.
This is not as difficult as it looks and once you get going you will start to feel the burn.
Lower Ab Exercises
Ab exercises which bring the lower half of your body towards the upper half concentrates more on working the muscles of your lower abs. The next 2 of my 6 best ab exercises specifically works the lower ab muscles and will help develop hot abs.
The Hip Thrusts are an excellent exercise which will really burn those lower ab muscles especially if performed slowly and under strict control.
1. Lie on your back with your legs bent 90 degrees at the hip.
2. Slowly lift your hips off the floor and towards the ceiling.
3. Lower your hips to the floor and repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
The fourth of my 6 best ab exercises is the reverse crunch. This is another great ab exercise which will really give you that burning feeling if you perform them correctly and as shown.
1. Start by lying on your back with your hands behind or above your head.
2. Proceed to draw in your belly button toward your spine and lift both legs up at the same time towards your chest.
3. Return to the starting position and repeat making sure that you don't arch your back as you are lowering or raising your legs.
You can use the floor or a bunch for this exercise and can also be done incline and decline.
The Oblique's
The oblique's is the area at the sides of your abdomen and can be a really stubborn area to develop especially if you have love handles.
The oblique crunch is the filth of my 6 best ab exercises and is really effective at working the sides of your six pack. The video shown demonstrates only one side of the body, obviously you need to perform the exercise on both sides of your body for the benefits.
1. Start by placing your left foot over your right knee and place your hands behind your head.
2. Lift your shoulders up off the ground and twist so that your right elbows tries to touch your left knee.
3. Return to the starting position and repeat according to the required repetitions.
4. Repeat with the other side.
Perform your reps in strict movement really focusing on squeezing your abs as the contract.
The last of my 6 best ab exercises is the lying side crunch. This ab exercise is great for targeting the oblique's and shaving that fat from your love handles.
1) Lie with back on floor or bench with knees bent.
2) Start position: Let your knees fall to the right so that your hips are somewhat rotated.
3) Leading with the chin and left shoulder, contract abdominal muscles and raise left shoulder off floor or bench towards left knee.
4) Return to start position. Repeat with other side.
5) Remember to keep head and neck in neutral position throughout movement. Do not twist excessively - elbow does not need to touch knee.
What i like the most about all of my 6 best ab exercises is that they are easy to perform and do not require any equipment, they are true body weight exercises and are highly effective at developing the abdominal area.
