The atkins diet was invented by Dr Robert Atkins and is basically a low carb diet.

Atkins claimed there are two important factors to getting overweight.

1) The main cause of obesity is eating refined carbohydrates (carbs) particularly sugar, flour, and high-fructose syrups.

2) Saturated fat is overrated as a nutritional problem, being not as important in developing vascular disease, and that trans fats from sources such as hydrogenated oils are much more important in developing vascular disease.

While Dr Atkins diet plan focus's mainly on the food side of things you still need nutritional supplements and exercise to get the full effects from the program.

How it works

When you eat too many carbohydrates (carbs), your body burns some of those carbs for energy and stores the excess carbs as fat.

When you eat fewer carbs - especially white flour and sugar, your body begins burning fat as its primary fuel source.

That's how Atkins works - you eat the 'right' foods and change your body from a carb-burning to a fat-burning machine.

Basically you stick to eating proteins and fats.

You need to still do exercise and the Atkins diet plan suggests you do moderate exercise daily. Exercise can be classed as going swimming, taking the kids for a walk, playing ball in the garden etc.. It does not mean you have to don a leotard and gym a gym but if you do thats great.

 

The claims

'You can lose up to 15 pounds in the first two weeks of the program and that's just the beginning'.

These are pretty dramatic claims but there are hundreds of people who have used this program and had dramatic results.

'You will keep the weight off'

Once your body turns from a carb burning to a fat burning machine you will lose weight and keep it off. Well this is the theory anyway.

Phase 1 of The Atkins Diet


Turbo charge your metabolism
You'll reduce your carbohydrate intake to 20 Net Carbs per day.
As you reduce carbs and sugars and you start increasing your activity level, your body revs into action and begins to use fat for your primary fuel source, resulting in weight loss.

Eat a variety of foods
You will eat lean protein such as chicken, fish, lean cuts of beef, eggs and more. You can have your choice of good fats; olive oil is one of the best. Plus, you'll eat leafy greens, a variety of fresh vegetables.

Say goodbye by carbs atkins diet

To follow the atkins diet plan you will only eat foods from the acceptable foods list.

Does the Atkins diet work

Yes like any diet plan if you follow the instructions exactly it will work for you and if you stick to the 4 phases and the foods list then you should be on track for losing lots of weight.

I have not tried this program personally but know of people who have and they only problems they have had is lack of energy during the first two weeks or so where carbs are eliminated.
