The best exercises are the ones that train large muscle groups and use your body weight. Obviously you can get a great workout from using weights however not everyone has access to weights or resistance machines so i am going to show you some simple bodyweight exercises you can do to start toning your body.
Toning is important because if for example you lose weight fat you will be left with excess sagging skin and flab which looks horrid. By toning these areas you will have a nice firm body to be proud of.
The first area that we all think of when we talk about firming and toning is the stomach. The best toning exercises for the stomach area is the bicycle crunch. The bicycle crunch works the upper, lower and oblique muscles in your midsection and therefore is one of the single most effective stomach exercises.
1) Lie back onto floor or bench with knees bent and hands behind head. Keep elbows back and out of sight. Head should be in a neutral position with a space between chin and chest.
2) Start position: Place hands behind head. Straighten right leg.
3) Leading with the chin and chest towards the ceiling, contract the abdominal's and raise shoulders off floor or bench. During the crunch, bring right knee towards chest.
4) Return to start position and repeat with the left leg.
5) Remember to keep head and back in a neutral position. Hyperextension or flexion of either may cause injury.
For the legs and the lower body then bodyweight squats are the best toning exercises for this area. The squat literally works the entire leg including the thigh, hamstrings and the glutes for an all round toning effect.
1. Start by placing feet shoulder width apart and holding your arms out in front of you.
2. Proceed to squat down like you are going to sit in a chair. Your upper body will lean forward slightly and your hips will shift backwards while going down.
3. Remember to keep your knees from going out in front of your toes while squatting.
4. Repeat according to your required repetitions. If you want to make the exercise more challenging hold your arms at your sides or behind your head.
Since the glutes are an area which we all know is hard to tone i have included this specific bodyweight toning exercises which isolates this area. The Single Leg Knee Raise should be preformed as follows.
1. Start by placing your foot up on the wall or on a bench.
2. Proceed to rise up on the ball of your foot and as you do this try to squeeze your glutes on the same leg.
3. Sometimes if you place your hand on the spot you are trying to activate you will get a better activation response.
4. Continue to do this for the desired repetitions and then repeat with the other leg.
Star jumps or jumping jacks although not a specific exercise for toning a specific area it is great for general fitness and conditioning.
Start with your legs side by side and your arms by your side.
In one motion jump and spread your legs out to the side while your arms raise out and up over your head.
Land in this position and then return to the starting position and repeat.
This exercise is so easy to perform and serves great as a pre workout warm and stretch combined. I always included jumping jacks into my body weight routines.
The standard push up is one of the best toning exercises for the upper body and includes the chest, shoulders and triceps. If you cannot manage the exercise as shown then you can do them with your knees resting on the floor. There are lots of variation to this movement and by simply changing your hand position you will hit different areas of your upper body and arms.
1. Lie face down on the floor with hands palm down, fingers pointing straight ahead, and aligned at the nipple line.
2. Place hands slightly wider than shoulder width, and feet should be at hip width with toes on floor.
3. Start position: Extend the elbows and raise the body off the floor.
4. Lower your entire body (legs, hips, trunk, and head) 4-8 inches from the floor.
5. Return to the start position by extending at the elbows and pushing the body up.
6. Remember to keep the head and trunk stabilized in a neutral position by isometrically contracting the abdominal and back muscles. Never fully lock out the elbows at the start position and avoid hyperextension of the low back. The push up is one of the best toning exercises for the upper body.
The best toning exercises workout videos
The first video i am going to show you is the bodyweight workout and uses no equipment. Its not for complete beginners as some of the body weight exercises require a small amount of core strength to perform.
Video 2 is a great workout for anyone including beginners and is great for toning the entire body. Do not rush through the exercises take your time, as you get experienced you can increase the intensity but the main focus from these exercises is muscles tone, so make your muscles feel like they are doing all the work.

If you are still holding fat then not a problem, you may however want to hold fire on the toning exercises and have a workout which will burn fat and help tone at the same time.
