A muscle gaining drink is essential post workout. After your workout your body will literally be crying to be fed. After your workout your muscles will be depleted and require proteins and carbohydrates to stimulate growth and aid recovery.
There should be to things you need to consider when making your own muscle building drink:
Protein
Carbohydrates
A great way to add carbs to a shake is by using a pre made milk shake. Low fat chocolate milk is an excellent example as it contains to right amount of carbs for creating that desired insulin spike, it tastes good and has protein. The carb content can be increased by adding a banana or other piece of fruit. This will help create an insulin spike and shuttle the protein into the muscles.
Next you are going to want to increase the protein content. The best way to do this is by adding a whey protein powder. A simple whey powder is usually around 30-40g of protein per serving and when added to the extra protein in the chocolate milk you have a great high protein muscle building drink.

Add the following to a blender
1 Scoop of whey protein powder (vanilla works well)
1 Banana
500ml of Chocolate milk
500ml of Water
Blend for a minute and consume. This recipe makes a fairly large shake so you can always split it down and drink half straight after a workout and half a few hours later.
This muscle building drink is great for hard gainers and skinny guys looking to bulk up. You can customize it by adjusting the protein and carb content.

By simply adding a protein powder to a high carbohydrate drink such as gatorade you get a good post workout shake high in protein and carbs.
To spice your shake up even more you can add a spoonful of creatine powder to your drink. This will get forced into the muscles by the high carbohydrates.
Don't spend to much time worrying about protein:carb ratios as long as you consume some carbs and protein post workout you will be fine.
