Overcome Your Weight Lifting Plateau


A plateau is something that happens when your body stops responding to the training that you are doing and results in you not getting any bigger or any stronger.

The plateau will happen to all weight lifters at some point and can be disheartening because you will be training hard and not seeing results. It is a common reason why some people give up weight training.

 


So What do you do when you hit a weight lifting plateau?

The key to keep building muscle is to keep doing exercises which allow you to keep making gains. For example if i can lift 200lbs for 10 reps for 3 sets and i come back to the gym and do the same workout again (including exercises, sets, reps and weight) then the body will simply get used to it and you will stop responding to the training.

What you need to do is find another exercise which works the same body parts and start making gains on that. When you gains start to slow down then you can switch to another exercise and so on.


Just because you cant increase the weight on a particular exercise it doesn't mean that your body have reached its maximum genetic potential for that exercise. All this means it that you have hit your weight lifting plateau on this specific movement.


Another way of looking at this is that if you were to watch the same movie over and over again every simple week then you will simply get board of it and not want to pay any attention to it. This is similar to how the body reacts to you doing the same weight lifting exercises day in day out, it will get bored and stop giving you results.


Changing the exercises in your weight lifting program every couple of weeks will prevent your body from hitting this plateau and should provide you with consistent gains in muscle size and strength.
